'Cellular Cycle' (2011)
The "Woven Botanics" project revolves around the use of botanical references in the woven structure, using and referencing botanical material and developing an individual, contemporary and experimental approach. This project was enthused by the scientific and molecular essence of botanics. The process of how one cell becomes a trillion cells. Nature has ingeniously evolved and engineered itself to transform botanics from asexual to sexual reproduction. The move from mitosis that generates parent cells reproduced simply by dividing (asexual reproduction) and altered it to meiosis where two parent cells to combine to create offspring (sexual reproduction). The circular diagrams of the stages of meiosis and mitosis embody the ideas behind my weaving process. Referencing the bright and varying colours of botanical illustration and scientific diagrams a vibrant weave was woven using a recycled materials from previous experimentation and found objects. The weave was taken of the loom and free machine embroidered to create ovular and irregular circles. The work is infused by the fascinating and miraculous process that botanics undergo to reproduce and evolve.
