Going Somewhere (2013)
Going Somewhere explores negotiations of place and identity through acts of intervention in the Mildura landscape. The project has been inspired by the unique history of Mildura as Australia’s first ‘irrigation colony,’ responding to themes of productive and unproductive labour, community progress, cultivated landscapes, and ephemeral land art practices. Through a series of site-specific video, sculpture and performance works, Going Somewhere presents offers the audience an ambivalent view of progress and development within the context of Mildura’s civic history and future ambitions.
This body of work was commissioned for Mildura Palimpsest #9, a biennial arts festival in regional Victoria. My participation in Palimpsest’s student mentorship program (uniVARS) was supported by a grant from COFA and an Art and Design Grant from Arc@COFA.
