Expressing Pi - Concept Sketeches
Pi is a mathematical constant that appears in an array of forms. It cannot be written down numerically, instead presenting itself as an endless line of numbers. Yet pi can be perfectly expressed by drawing a circle. 'Expressing Pi' seeks to investigate this relationship within a spacial context. By using a parametric design approach an infinite amount of possibilities can be generated to express the geometrical character of pi. This design connects a mathematically generated outcome with an affordable fabrication process, known as 'zipshape', which has been tailored to work with a computer generated definition. After investigating the properties of 3D mathematical graphing, three mathematical functions relating to pi and the sine function were selected. These forms were then taken and translated into potential structures that allow for user interaction.
