Industrial Girls
Striving to survive in a world bent upon
breaking their spirit, these girls represent a
dark side of Australia we rarely see. With a
determination to represent the social behaviour
of colonial Australia I wish to reconnect Australia
with our history and by extension Cockatoo
Island. I hope to re-establish a link between
adults and their own childhoods to convey
the sense of the experiences these girls went
through.
Created to be a keepsake, the Biloela
doll produces a sense of companionship by
sharing an experience with the end user. The
experience begins when the user first cuts open
the packaging to get to the doll. Realising
they’ve also cut into the doll, they initiate a
sense of understanding the harsh treatment the
girls experienced. As they explore the doll they
uncover the stories the Biloela girls, connecting
them to the social behaviour of Australia’s
history.
