(re)Forming the Cage
Hong Kong Cage Homes Design. Design Major Project. With 1.19 million people in Hong Kong living in poverty, the provision of affordable housing is a challenge. As such, some individuals are forced into ‘cage homes’ which may have as many as four individual living spaces stacked on top of each other in a 30 square foot space. These spaces are poorly ventilated, are often overrun by pests and have inadequate sewage facilities, posing both health and safety risks. Based on the theory of Spatial Entitlement, this project aims to raise the question ‘what is essential within a home?’ by bringing awareness to the issues that exist within the cage. Informed by the martial arts discipline Tai Chi, (re)Forming the Cage reconfigures the cage’s structure by studying the body in motion in order to challenge perceptions of this form of living space and its inhabitants.
