“Bloodflower” is my personal exploration of Cape Town’s post-Apartheid transformation. It is a response to “Bridging the Divide”, one of the four themes behind Cape Town’s 2014 World Design Capital event.

The Blood Flower or Haemanthus, is unique to South Africa and is one of the first plants to emerge from the charred earth after fire. Its robust, fleshy appearance and its subsequent explosion into a multitude of yellow stamens, is a perfect symbol for the defiance, passion and energy of the South African people in their attempts to respond to grave adversity and bridge past divides.
