I will diminish
I have recently found myself fascinated by my mother’s hands, as they have suddenly begun to resemble my grandmother’s who died nearly 10 years ago. Once resembling my hands, the last few years have transformed them with age, bringing her closer to the generation before her than the one after. I have created soap casts of both my own and my mother’s hands. As the audience bathes 'these' hands and their own, the soap is weathered down until it finally disappears. Drawing upon universally recognisable symbols, the work references cultural and religious ceremonies and practices that involve purification and cleansing.
