Hairy Cups
This work investigates western pubic depilation and ornamentation trends as well as the associated social, sexual and commercial values. This piece of propoganda aims to critique mass cultures influence and questions our compliance to the beauty industry. Everybody seems to have an eternal desire to permanently possess an idealised and transitory concept of beauty.
This work takes hair out of its current context in the everyday world and places it into an art and design world. The result allows the viewers to recognize the hair as a familiar material that has been combined with the ceramic form to become something foreign. The cups have been designed to be soft and gentle to touch, yet have an element of grotesqueness because of the hair enveloped in the resin handles, as well as the hair on the saucers and sugar bowl.
