Make A Mark: Cockatoo Island
Make a Mark is an integrated project design that aimed to 'Revitalise' & 'Renew' Cockatoo Island. The premise of the design is to discard all preconceived notions of the island based on its appearance and to allow visitors the opportunity to see past its industrial facade and into the memories and history behind the site. Make a Mark is inspired by the markings engraved on the island's sandstone structure by the former inhabitants and convicts of the island and reinterpreting them as the memories and echoes of these people. The project is both a textiles and graphic installation with letterpress, eco-dyeing, felting and visual branding all part of the process. The idea was to create an installation that mimicked the structure of the island through textiles, while the interactive part of the project was through graphical elements including handbooks, maps and letter-pressing activities.
