Childhood Heroes 2013
Animated characters play a major role in our lives when we are growing up. As children we look up to these iconic figures, sharing their journeys and becoming part of their enchanting world. We follow in the footsteps of these idols as they guide us on our path to adulthood. I have always been interested in the fun and playfulness of animated characters throughout my life, which has influenced my work as an artist. There is something intriguing about the performative nature of dressing up and incorporating costumes, makeup and props as a combined form of expression. I mix fantasy with reality by removing these characters from their fairytale world and placing them into local suburbia. I portray the key elements that identify and distinguish these fictitious characters, so they become easily recognisable. The concept of make believe captivates our childhood instincts and draws us back into a comfortable, familiar, imaginary world.
