Homage to the Functional Object
My work sits within sculpture and painting, utilising traditional painting materials then manipulating them in order to blur the boundaries and possibilities of painting. The ‘paintings’ depict everyday objects, reassessing the value of the art object. These specific objects are functional and serve to clean away human excrement. The white canvas and gesso refers to the beginning of a painting, the blank canvas. The blank canvas further alludes to Minimalism and non-objective painting. Applying Minimalists concepts of serialism and repetition, the work is comprised of equally proportioned components and simplified forms.
